Northeast Minneapolis

Just across the Mississippi River north of downtown Minneapolis, Northeast Minneapolis has transformed from a quiet residential neighborhood with an industrial heritage into a thriving community of close-knit neighborhoods, corner stores and diverse culture. Artists, small businesses, ethnic restaurants and groceries, boxing gyms, churches and architectural salvage yards coexist and flourish among lumberyards, rail lines, a working port and even an old brewery. Red Square, located on Central Avenue, is in the center of it all.

About the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District

The Northeast Minneapolis Arts District is now the locus for the arts community in the Twin Cities. Converted warehouses, private homes, railroad trestles, former manufacturing plants, sidewalks and cafes provide the fabric and real estate for 400 galleries, workspaces, living quarters and rehearsal centers which populate Northeast neighborhoods. Over the past decade, Northeast has experienced a cultural and economic revival — in large part due to the tightly woven art community at the core of the neighborhood. Potters, tile makers, painters, sculptors, musicians, photographers, glass blowers, printmakers and textile designers showcase their art in warehouses, church basements, living rooms, storefronts and cafes throughout the neighborhood.
